A new Aladdin film is coming our way on May 24, 2019. The first teaser of the film was released in October 2018, and it just let the Genie out but we never saw who the Genie was, but with the new trailer that debuted during the Grammys last night shows Will Smith as the Genie. Will Smith has always told us that he was the Genie but we never saw him, so in a cute Instagram post he let it be known that he told us.
This is a remake from the beloved film that debuted in 1992. Will Smith reprises the role of the Genie that was originally played by Robin Williams. When asked how his version differs from Williams he said:
“There’s a little bit less mimicking — there’s a James Brown piece that we do but a little bit less mimicking. The thing that will be the major addition from me playing the Genie is the hip-hop base. I think that’ll be fun for people. I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world. There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history!”
Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Will Smith as the Genie. Super excited about this remake because I loved the original, even saw it in the theatre, yeah, I am truly dating myself with that. But, so glad that a new generation will be exposed to the greatness that is Aladdin. I am just hoping that it lives up to the phenomenal that it was back then.
In theatres May 24, 2019.
